General Introduction :

Italy has emerged as the 3rd largest market for Indian exports in the EU after Germany and UK Italy covers an area of 301,300 sq.kms. with a population of 57.85 million inhabits as per the 1991 census. The population density is 192.0 per sq.kms. The climate in Italy is generally temperate in the north and Mediterranean in the south. In the capital, Rome, the hottest month is 8 degree Celsius. Rome has an annual average of over 700 mm of rain, with wet autumns and dry influences and in the Alps it is still colder but drier in the winter.

Economy:

Even though the Italian economy is basically agriculture, it has undergone such a process of industrialization as to be classified now among the few most industrialized countries of the world. This has provided a stimulus for the foreign trade, particularly with the member nations of EU.

GNP in 1990 was 1188 thousand billion Liras, that is a per capita GNP of 18848 US dollars. The output of Italian textile industry ranked second behind Germany in the EU countries. The Italian knitting industry is the biggest in the EU, aided in the mass market by the success of companies with expanding international distribution chains and in value added markets by reputable designer names. The export boom may be coming to an end. Unfavorable currency movements and continuing inflation in the economy are making Italian goods less competitive.

Importing Environment:

Exporting for some items of defense stores, there are no restrictions on imports into Italy, which are allowed on payment of customs duty prescribed by the Italian customs tariff. No quotas have been set up for the import of any commodities from India. Practically all rates of duties are advalorem. Italy accords GSP on par with other EC countries. Italy accords GSP on par with other EC countries. Italy has a highly booming economy, wherein incomes are rising fast. The overall increase in demand is largely being met through increased imports, thereby creating greater prospects for foreign goods. About 40% of Italian imports are from other EC countries. Other important trading partners of Italy are USA and EFTA countries.

Textile, Garments, Yarns etc. remained the largest sector of India’s export to Italy and registered an increase of over 90% of India’s export to Italy. However, its share in overall exports to Italy declined from 34% in 1991 to 32.2% indicating a greater diversification of India’s export basket to Italy. Exports of other textile products like furnishings, linen etc. fell slightly from 59.8% billion Lire in 1991 to 58.7 billion Lire in 1992 .In order to increase our exports in this sector focus would have to be on non quota items like silk and silk products, ready-made and makeup’s of artificial and synthetic materials, sports wear, high fashion wear, etc. Indian companies should try to establish their own brand names for higher realizations and customer loyalty.
